1886 — Elihu Thomson Invents Electric Welding

Have you ever seen bright sparks fly when two pieces of metal are joined together? That is called welding, and it is a very important way to build strong things. Long ago, joining metal was difficult.

But an inventor named Elihu Thomson figured out a clever way to use electricity to do it. In 1886, he invented a method called electric welding. With electricity, metal could be heated until it was soft enough to join two pieces together into one strong, solid piece. This made building things with metal much easier and stronger than before.

Electric welding became super important for building all sorts of things: bridges, ships, cars, buildings, and machines of all kinds. Almost everything made of metal that we use today is held together by welding!
